Fashion in the Commons

FIDM300Why should designers in the fashion industry be allowed to copy other designers’ work? The Lear Center’s Johanna Blakley will discuss the ethics of “knock-offs” at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Blakley’s talk explores the fashion industry’s relationship with the “creative commons,” a shared pool of artistic design and cultural references. She will address how copyright, patent and trademark law have shaped the commons for fashion, and the potential ramifications of the recent Design Piracy Prohibition Act, which would allow designers to copyright their garment designs.
