Louis C.K… and Me

Web EvilLouis C.K. left the internet a few months ago.

What a great idea! Me, too!

Except I’m the NLC webmaster.

An August vacation offered me my chance. Freedom seized!

My attention span = that of a goldfish.

“I don’t like the way [the internet] feels anymore.” – Louis C.K. Me, too..

“Research shows that the very sight of the iPhone anywhere in your line of vision actually changes the conversation.” – Sherrry Turkle, MIT

I wanted to step outside and take in the day, rather than checking Yahoo Weather.

“We’re losing the raw, human part of being with each other.” – Sherry Turkle, MIT

“Smart technologies are not just disruptive; they can also preserve the status quo. Revolutionary in theory, they are often reactionary in practice.” – Evgeny Morozov

We now spend more time looking at our cell phones than at our partner, children or friends.

“Technology proposes itself as the architect of our intimacies.” – Sherry Turkle, MIT

I felt diminished by all the screens in my life filled with faux intimacy and curated selves.

3.5 days. No email, no calls, no streaming video, no web browsing. Texting only in an emergency.

Reset my life. Calm. Joy.

No need to take breaks for mindfulness practice.

I can again read substantial chunks of real books.

Some fresh ideas popped into my head, apparently confident that I’d pay attention to them.

Totes worthwhile experiment which will remain a touchstone for me.

I’m back as webmaster, grateful for the many digital tools I daily use, yet warier than ever about the dark snake hole the web offers. Stay tuned!
